Nearly sixty teachers attended the LLC teacher trainings in November.
In Ft. Yates, the training was attended by 18 Lakota language teachers from nearly every school on Standing Rock Indian Reservation, as well as teachers from Cheyenne River and Pierre, SD.
In Pine Ridge, the training was attended by 40 Lakota language teachers from most schools on the Pine Ridge and Cheyenne River reservations. Other teachers attended from as far away as Vermillion, SD, Iowa, and Nebraska.
The 2-day workshop was the primary introduction to skills basic to teaching Lakota effectively in the classroom and was divided into four parts: Teaching Methods; Lakota phonology and morphology; Lakota Grammar and Structure; and language classroom environmentals.
As an intensive overview, this course begins by preparing teachers in the latest and most effective language teaching techniques currently in use around the world. Special emphasis was on methods that work for teaching the four basic language competencies: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Teachers also learned how to motivate students and young learners and how to structure language classes to keep students' attention.
