2009 Lakota Summer Institute

2009 Lakota Summer Institute Registration

In June 2008, the LLC co-sponsored the Lakota Summer Institute held at Sitting Bull College. The other sponsors were: Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Sitting Bull College, and Prairie Knights Casino. Participants also came from the Rosebud, Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Reservations. Participants received various types of language instruction responsive to their level of familiarity. All teachers took an afternoon class in language teaching methods. Institute trainers included instructors from Sitting Bull College, the Lakota Language Consortium, Indiana University, and the University of Minnesota.

The 2009 Lakota Summer Institute, held June 1-19, promises to be just as engaging. Besides helping others to learn to teach Lakota the activities and free-time are designed to bring people from different backgrounds together to build community and support networks. In 2009, participants will have the benefit of using the New Lakota-Dakota Dictionary and the opportunity to run through some of the materials for the forthcoming Level 3 Lakota Language Textbook.

These educational opportunities have never been available in the region and the Lakota Summer Institute marks a new commitment to improving Lakota language teaching in support of the Lakota-Dakota speaking communities. College credit hours may be available; call 1 888 525 6828 or email us for details.
