LAKOTA LANGUAGE TEACHER-TRAINING

This two-day teacher training in-service is designed for Lakota language teachers using the LLC curriculum materials.  It is intended to familiarize teachers with the Level 1and Level 2 textbooks, the teacher manuals, and with teaching techniques that work effectively in concert with the curriculum materials.
Teaching any language well, including Lakota, is dependent on a firm foundation in methods, linguistics, and classroom competencies. This course is the primary introduction to skills basic to teaching Lakota effectively in the classroom and is divided into four parts: Teaching Methods; Lakota phonology and morphology; Lakota Grammar and Structure; and language classroom environmentals.

As an intensive overview, this course begins by preparing teachers in the latest and most effective language teaching techniques currently in use around the world.  Special emphasis will be on methods that work for teaching the four basic language competencies: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing.  Teachers will also learn how to motivate students and young learners and how to structure language classes to keep students' attention.

Instructor: Jan Ullrich, MA, Linguistic Director LLC,  Curriculum developer and certified Second-language teacher trainer
