Become a Lakota speaker, language activist,  or teacher and discover the other person you are when you speak Lakota!

Registration is now open online for the 2012 Lakota Summer Institute.  And Sitting Bull College in Fort Yates, ND, Standing Rock, is once again the host for this “boot camp” in Lakota language study.

As teachers advance and more non-teachers get involved, the course schedule evolves. This year’s courses include:  Intensive Lakota for Beginners I-III, Teaching Lakota 1-4 Methods, Lakota Drama Performance for Teachers, Intensive Lakota for Pre-Intermediates I-III,  Reading I,  Discoursive Narrative and Recording I,  Process Writing I, Dakota Material Development I, Classroom Materials Development I

The success of the New Zealand Maori people’s language revitalization has always been an inspiration to LLC and our teachers.  That inspiration has gone both ways.  During LSI’s final week, June 20-22, a group of 30 Maori educators affiliated with the  Institute of Excellence in the Maori Language (Te Panekiretanga O Te Reo Maori)
will be guests at LSI, bringing together two cultures that have endured suppression and come back with dignity and creative power.  Maori language activist and elder Dr. Timoti Karetu was a guest instructor at LSI in 2010 and we are honored to host such a large group this time.

Institute of Excellence in the Maori Language is well know for their pōhiri, a Māori protocol welcoming ceremony.  Here is an example:

Help us welcome the Maori this summer as well.  Go to http://www.regonline.com/2012lakotasummerinstitute to make your registration.  We look forward to seeing you in June 4-22nd!
