Can you put your Lakhota skills to work for a fair election process? Lakhota speakers have a chance to serve the country and assist the tribe’s voters during the South Dakota primary elections in June. However, the window for hiring Poll Observers is closing soon and you have to act quickly. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 makes the Federal Government responsible for hiring personnel to ensure that all citizens can vote in elections, and have their votes accurately counted, regardless of language or cultural differences.
The U. S. Office of Personnel Management contacted the Consortium specifically to ask Lakhota speakers to consider applying for these temporary, paid positions in time for the June 8th primary election in South Dakota. The work schedule is about four days, covering travel time, training and the polling day, and those who are hired can be re-hired in further elections. Pay is $20 per hour during travel, training and work, plus reimbursement for travel expenses.
